Green offers Mundine rematch

DANNY Green became the World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion by claiming a unanimous points decision against titleholder Stipe Drews in Perth.
After promising for years to put on a world title bout in Perth for his legion of local fans, Green did not disappoint at Challenge Stadium, beating a backpedaling Drews on all three judges' scorecards, 118-111, 118-110 and 120-108.
And with his wife Nina in the crowd, despite being due to give birth to their second child, the victory capped an emotional week and a gradual rebirth since his defeat by Anthony Mundine last year.
Green said a rematch Mundine could now happen, in Perth.
"I am the official world champion ... it is in my backyard, it is on my terms if he wants it,'' Green said in the ring after the fight.
"I promised a long time ago ... to bring the world title to Perth, I promised I would be world champion and I promised I would win it in my own backyard.
"You can take the interim world champion and shove it up your arse. I am the official world champion.
"I have been robbed in Germany (when disqualified against Marcus Beyer in 2003), I have been destroyed about my performance in big fights.
"It doesn't get any better than this, until my new baby comes."
Green also thanked former trainer and ex-world champion Jeff French, who has fallen out with Green since being replaced.
"I would also like to thank Jeff Fenech, who does not speak to me anymore," Green said.
"But I would not be here ... if I had not been with him in the first place."
Drews was touted as one of the most awkward opponents in the world, at 184cm and with prodigious reach, and he had lost only one of 33 fights, against Australia's Paul Briggs, before winning the title against Silvio Branco in April.
But the result was obvious and deserved after round after round of Green attacking and Drews evading.
Green ended the fight kissing the tattoo of his daughter and being chaired inside the ring before the announcement. He then ran to his wife and kissed her then her bump.
With a rematch against Mundine already touted, Green now has the gold around his waist to tempt other major challengers, including International Boxing Federation champion Clinton Woods and World Boxing Organisation champion Zsolt Erdei.
And any doubts over Green's legitimacy as a world champion - after he was made interim World Boxing Council super-middleweight champion after beating Eric Lucas in Canada four years ago - were also wiped away.
