I collect multiple players too and I actually had that recently happen to me. I had just dropped some $$ on a Melo patch auto, then BAM the next day a DeMarcus logoman /5 shows up on eBay. I wasn't impressed to say the least and now, with Melo being a Knick and all, I sort of look at that Melo patch auto and think what could have been lol.
On a serious note now, The different sports draw, I think, a different sort of collector. I get the impression that a lot of bball collectors build their PC around individual players rather than a team. My PC is built around my team, the Broncos of course and my collection starts in 1988. I would not be interested in any cards prior to that and my collection does not change when players come and go, I mean if Darren L left the club tomorrow and signed with Parra I would not chase down any highend cards that come out of DL in parra colours because he is not part of my team.
its (changing pc) not something i have ever done or am likely to ever do. i dont understand how ppl have more than 1 pc player...i cant see how you could spend x amount of dollars on one player when you could spend it on a better card of your other player??? there are ppl on here who seem to chop and change on a daily basis and there are ppl on here who seem to get just about everything and there are ppl on here who seem to get some random stuff and guys on here who have a 2nd pc player because nothing of their main pc player comes up....as has been mentioned quite a few times ppl who collect things seem to be missing quite a bit in the mental department (im prime example!) so what ppl do on here really isnt a surprise but can be a bit of a pain in the a$$.
as for free cards ive given away close to 200 pippens to various collectors on here and never really cared what they've done for them...i couldnt be stuffed trying to sell em so i gave them away...no way id give away a card to 900 like tak35bne did (he does follow the broncos so not surprising ) because i dont trust anyone to do the right thing with generosity...plus i have a temper and would want to kill them if they screwed me
I have a main PC and two side ones. The main one being the Ray Allens. The side ones sprung up mainly because apart from the $400+ Ray cards out there i pretty much fished what i needed out of the ocean. The reason i Picked Harangody and Bradley were because at the time they were both Celtics and had just started. No idea what direction I will go in with the Harangody now, i think it may sit there as it is. Mainly because i picked up with some damn nice cards I do not want to part with. The Bradley i'll probably keep collecting. Plus as you said we are all a little bat **** insane so that helps.
coming back into the hobby after a long hiatus, the term PC was very new to me. the idea was also a little foriegn. when i first started collecting, it was all about getting the sets finished. always on the lookout for star players etc, but sets was a main part of the collecting. now, the game has certainly changed.
personally, im still a set collector (not base so much). i couldnt start a player collection because theres just too many greats id want, but i guess i do get alot more bird & nowitzki cards than any others...
i can definately see why people change players. i guess im hoping to finish some high end sets that will encaptulate alot of my favourites...
regarding the selling of freebies, i think its a bit harsh giving someone a card, with the condition that they basically have to be buried with it...just be happy with your generous act.
no theres nothing wrong with collection multiple players, dont know how you all do it! iverson isnt cheap and westbrook wont be soon either so how do you feel when u drop $$ on dwill and then a sick ai or westbrook comes up? thats why i could never do it..u guys who do are crazier than me!
Well not like I have bought much of late because of lack of funds, but I see where you're coming from.... however what I came up with (actually a suggestion by a friend) was to only go for (read: prioritize) their earlier year cards so you have a focus & are not going after everything full guns blazing..... because frankly there is just waaaaay too much out there & when you do a search on ebay for their cards you see about a million you need & have no real idea what ones you should be going for...... So as you can see from my sig I have been prioritizing AI's cards from his first 3 years & Deron & Westbrook from their RC years. Whilst I am happy to trade for ANY cards I need of those players, I will ONLY buy cards from the years I have made a PRIORITY!
The weird part is seeing people who wanna super collect this new rookie and blah la. Then next year it's this rookie and on and on. I mean its not me so I don't really care it's just weird to me. I love the loyal collectors who you see on forums for years looking for the same guys always. Like myself haha. I am like one of 2-3 Current Marbury collectors that I know of. I love seeing guys who have a massive collection of a player who has been in the league ten+ years and still wants cards of that guy. Not those guys who collect who's hot and what not.
