I can't quite believe it.

Regardless of whether you loved or loathed his opinions, Peter was an amazing wordsmith. He once described Steve Waugh as "carrying the expression of a bloke whose lawnmower won't start".

A great writer on the sport, and a far cry from the sensationalist gossip columnists that masquerade as cricket writers today.

RIP Peter Roebuck.

I for one am well and truly gutted.

Was only listening on Friday night. Jim Maxwell and Peter Roebuck (and the 2BL gang) were a HUGE part of my summer - in the car, at work, watching Ch 9 with their commentating.

His last words in his last column were:
"A lot can happen in a week. It just did."

I am a grown man of 35 and cried openly when I watched the ABC news tonight, thinking it was all just some sort of false story (I wasn't home all day and hadn't watched any news or been online either).

I just don't know. I have little reason to read the SMH after NRL Grand Final and until Rd 1. The ABC radio broadcast will be less without him.

Sorry...but I found it terrible news and quite upsetting.

Tragic way for his life to end, I too could not believe the story on The Age's website this morning. Simply a dreadful way for him to go out when his work was appreciated and respected by so many cricket lovers. His articles were full of passion and his ability to convey the game of cricket as an artform and as the ultimate sporting theatre was a unique talent.

It will be interesting to see what unfolds over the next few days - for police to be in his room before or at the time of his death would indicate this whole tragedy might have been averted...
