Apparently there is some legal disputes between COMC and Beckett. Is this true? and if it is, does anybody know what is happening.

yeah seem to remember something from COMC Blog a while back about that Beckett will not allow them to use the beckett price database anymore.

not sure about legal issues as such

Our signed agreement with Beckett ends on March 31, 2014. Over the next few weeks, we will transition the website checklist and price guide to our new catalog and suggested list prices. For a quick and smooth transition, we’re calling upon the community to help by participating in a series of Challenges.

COMC has been pretty diplomatic about this whole issue but just going through some possible rationale behind this whole movement. Some purely speculative reasons could include

1. Beckett just wants too much money for using their data.
2. Beckett's data is not comprehensive enough to cover many sets that are not listed there.
3. Beckett's book value is completely crap and out of touch with the actual sale value.

Again, these are just pure speculation but what other possible reasons can there be?

this...

This article gives a pretty good overall view of the lawsuit.

The main catalyst for the 'divorce' appears to be a COMC tech scraping all of Becketts checklist
data, which they are claiming copyright over.

All of Paul Leskos columns on the various trademark registration battles, etc between card companies
are also great reads..

COMC is a mess right now... absolute shambles.. and they're paying slave labour rates to users to do the dirty work of populating their database.

It'll be a long time off before we see anything resembling the previous COMC site.

COMC has been on the downhill slide for a long time, hope they put some incentive for collectors to start using there system (that COULD work very well) again...

The sales figures will plummet as with so much missing data, it renders any search useless. There is probably over a million cards in their database right now that have no player name.

It has become almost impossible to have accurate search results without any of the filters functioning properly.

Hopefully I'm wrong but the target of having functionality by the end of this month seems very unrealistic at this stage.

I have no problem with crowd sourcing providing there is a reasonable incentive. I think it takes about an average of 1.5 - 2mins to finish each challenge, providing you score 100 points each time, at $1 per 1000 points, you are making $3/hr. Its not only slave labor but its also manipulating the passion of collectors.
