No need for a long face, because I’m coming to you with another exciting entry of Check Out Your Cards, our blog post where we sit down with someone special and ask them about some of the fantastic cards we have on our site. This time, however, we got a horse of a different color. Hold on to your reins, folks, because yesterday’s interview left me so excited that I was racing to get this published. It simply would not do to keep this in the gates until Friday. For this edition, I got to horse around with Washington native, famed Triple Crown winner, and noted stallion, Seattle Slew, and talk about our terrific assortment of horse racing cards.
Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I wanted to ask Mr. Slew (as he told me his acquaintances call him) about ranking 9th in Blood-Horse Magazine’s List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. Mr. Slew whinnied triumphantly and stomped his hooves with joy.
In 1978 Mr. Slew had his first, and only, match up where he was not the favorite to win. While the race was neck and neck, it ended up with Mr. Slew out running Affirmed (another Triple Crown winner) by three lengths. Not only this, be he shaved .40 off the track record set by Secretariat.
When I took Mr. Slew to see our warehouse he immediately seemed drawn to this card – so much so that I had to stop him from nibbling the case off. With my horse-whispering expertise I gleaned from this action that Mr. Slew had always admired Seabiscuit. When I asked him if he was the least bit jealous of the several film and book deals that Seabiscuit had, Mr. Slew gave a resounding, “Neigh.”
This was the last card that I got a chance to ask him about before we put him back out to pasture. I wanted to know how he felt being put on a card along with the likes of Isiah Thomas, Payne Stewart, and Tito Ortiz. “I am deeply humbled by people’s desire to own a piece of my maiden silks, and am impossibly glad to be considered worthy of the honor of being immortalized in this manner,” said the ever loquacious steed.
