NBA NAMES PANINI EXCLUSIVE TRADING CARD PARTNER

Story Copyright 2009 Beckett Media

The NBA announced today that it has entered into an exclusive, multiyear agreement with Italian collectibles company Panini Group to become the sole manufacturer of NBA licensed trading cards and stickers beginning with the 2009-10 season, and running through at least 2011-12.

Panini is established in over 100 markets worldwide, but the US-market involvement has been modest by comparison. Panini plans to “re-create the domestic trading card market” and has announced that a new business will be set up immediately called “Panini America, Inc.,” with offices in the New York area.

The announcement follows weeks of industry speculation regarding the future of the NBA trading card market as manufacturers in every sport continue to struggle with harsh economic times.

“We’ve had a strong relationship with the NBA, but the deal they made with Panini does not make economic sense for Topps,” said Topps in a statement. “It may be great for the NBA, but the value wasn’t there for us and we’ve decided to invest elsewhere for the time being. We wish our colleagues at the NBA well and look forward to working with them in the future.”

The Panini Group, founded in 1961, recorded net revenues of 579 million Euros as recently as 2006 and employs more than 700 people worldwide. The company distributes its products – ranging from World Cup cards and NHL stickers to Disney entertainment products devoted to Hannah Montana and High School Musical.

“As we look to the future of our trading card business, there is general consensus, including with our current partners, Topps and Upper Deck, that moving forward with an exclusive partner is the best way for us to energize the category globally,” said Executive Vice President of NBA Global Merchandising Group Sal LaRocca in a news release.

“Our exclusive partnership with Panini provides us with the best opportunity to recreate the trading card market by developing the key retail channels with a variety of products and promotions geared towards all consumer segments.”

Said Beckett Senior Market Analyst Keith Hower: “It will be interesting to see what Panini can bring to the table regarding basketball cards. Known primarily for their sticker sets, it remains to be seen what sort of basketball card product they will be capable of producing. That said, the NBA has always had a strong global market, and Panini has a strong presence in markets previously untapped by basketball cards in both Europe and Asia. While it’s unclear how the domestic market will respond to Panini products, overseas markets should be pretty strong.”

“This is very big news for basketball collectors, perhaps the biggest since Fleer and the basketball card revival of the mid-’80s. Collectors will certainly be wondering what Panini will bring to the market. It’s exciting, but at the same time the ‘unknown’ is always scary, however, Panini has proven to be quite savvy in the card market with their soccer and non-sport products, so we can’t wait to see what 2009-10 will bring for basketball cards,” says Eric Jahnke, Beckett Basketball editor.

Upper Deck Responds to NBA's Trading Card Licensee Announcement

North Las Vegas, NV (January 27, 2009) – While Upper Deck is disappointed with the NBA's decision to grant exclusive trading card rights to a new licensee, they are reinforcing their commitment to producing the highest quality, most innovative and value-rich basketball products.

"Our focus remains on delivering great products to the loyal collectors and consumers who have passionately supported Upper Deck basketball products. We are confident the remaining 2008-09 NBA sets will be some of the best our industry has ever seen," said Upper Deck's VP of Sports Bernd Becker.

Upper Deck was granted a license to produce NBA trading cards in 1991 and shortly thereafter became the dominant market share leader in the category. They currently hold exclusive, multi-year autograph contracts with Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett.

Specific plans for the remaining 2008-2009 Upper Deck basketball brands will be announced in the coming weeks.

This is huge news.......This from the Sports card file...

Panini Exclusive NBA Trading Card Partner in 2009-10
Jan 27, 2009

What a stunning turn of events. I knew there would be a big announcement made at the end of this month, but this is not the one I was expecting.

There have been overtures made by both Topps and Upper Deck during the past year to the NBA requesting a sole manufacturer license. These were prudent discussions to have given the state of the basketball card market. The NBA has granted their request by giving an exclusive license to Panini. Their sticker and trading card license will run through the 2012-2013 NBA season.

With the lackadaisical haze that the basketball market has existed in for many years, I think it will be very interesting to watch Panini’s entrance into the U.S. trading card market.

There will be a follow-up post on this topic reviewing the market performance of both Topps and Upper Deck in recent years and the reasons behind NBAP (NBA Properties) making this decision.

WOW!!

That is huge news.

UD spent lots on it's Exclusive contracts........looks like they may lose big with these.

I will be sad to see no Exquisites :(

Be interested to see what Panini will bring. They may outsource to UD and Topps?????

Ersk

Holy crap, haven't seen Pannini products since the mid 90's stickers.....this will be the end of lots of collectors I'd imagine.....

Wow wow wow! Looks like there'll be less product out, which means I won't be at all tempted to buy :D:lol: Yay for saving money :) But dang on the collecting :(

Well, this is something out of the blue (for me anyway). UD (and Topps) still hold those exclusive contracts, so we will likely see their rights transfered (ie. sold) to Panini or as mentioned above we could see outsourcing.

This could actually be a very good thing for the hobby. It could bring a fresh perspective and will hopefully result in a diminished supply of product. Or it could be the start of a hobby hibernation...which may be good or bad.

Oh man! That sux!!!

What happens for the BBA anthem now???

Shooby douby doo wop, yeah......Panini!!!!

Thats doesn't work!!! haha!

Very interesting read! It might be a good thing for the hobby, but I don't have a clue why it's happened!!

Be interesting to see more info in the coming weeks!!!

Agreed. Although I think it might be the shake-up the hobby needed. We all have been saying the way to get the value back into the hobby is to reduce product and basically slow things right down, and this might figure to do this. Could be the hobby re-birth :)

Well UD and topps have killed the hobby to the point where it is today imo so why not take charge and kill them off first.

Seems the offer was too good for the NBA to knock back and Stern is crapping himself about money and looking to dump jobs in the NBA's front office and owners and the NBA are saying a lockout is going to happen soon when players refuse to take a paycut when the old salary rules end.

Pannini have come a long way since 1990. Just think about, so have UD, topps and Fleer. Its the printing technology that progresses not the companies plan to produce the same stickers for the next 100 years.

I can see a lot of collectors turning away but I doubt all do. This is beyond a hobby for some and they need their busting and buying fix. Then there are team collectors like me and team loyalty come a million times before brand loyalty. I don't give a crap who makes it, its Celtics and licenced and if its value, looks good and appeals to me I'll buy it.

Hell I'll buy it just so we reduce all the Jordan clutter.

How a Jordan auto collector sees this as bad news is beyond me! This should HELP his auto price and its not like you can already own all his auto examples at the moment. You still have hundreds upon hundreds of them to chase.

Will be interesting to see how they handle the high end. Where they make a crap load of money and surely we will see an exquisite equivalent. We may even seen players sign that don't sign now or ones that UD don't give a crap about so we don't have the SAME players each year and Von Wafer autos out number James Posey ones.

We might also see better value boxes, better redemption and replacements, better ethics and some innovation from someone that doesn't rely on its hobby monopoly to sell cards.

Lets hope they have taken note of card prices, card trends and what collectors have had to say and we see the end of a lot of the garbage we see now put out by UD and topps......

so we may see no more kobe/mj/bron autos if a contract transfer isn't done! Time to buy up peoples!

When Bron says he wants to be the first Billionaire player I doubt he lets his card contract go and doesn't work out some sort of deal with Pannini.

We are talking about NBA players after all and greedy agents.

All i really hope for is something fresh to come out of this. Some new ideas, new designs, something different that will hopefully keep as many people in the hobby as possible. Í will be going into this with an open mind and hopefully the exclusively contracted players don't end up getting frozen out, these draw card players are required for the hobby to sell product.

If somehow they can release a product where pretty much all the stars who sign, sign together.... then wow!

Interesting that the company is named after an italian bread roll too. Perhaps we'll see the innovation of game eaten food morsels in cards? Or jersey cards featuring mayonnaise stains?

lol very true, the fact that MJ sits on the UD board, may mean he isn't signing for anyone else, thus his values increasing slightly. Hopefully we'll see some new creative ideas and card values increase again. Anyone got pics of any rescent Pannnini releases even from other sports?

Huge news....as everyone has said it will be very interesting to see where they take the hobby. WIll they reduce the copius amounts of GU cards??? Reduce the mass production of Autos cards?? Will they bring back decent inserts??
