Hi Owen,
That signature is legit, card is from 1938 although the card itself is not rare - the full set of 1938 John Player cards can be had for around $40-50.
Looks like the auto was probably signed in the 1980s or early 90s going by the style of signature used. The fact that it is a very steady sig suggests it was definitely not late 90s.
