Well I caught my first baseball game in quite a while on the long weekend, the Oakland and L.A. It was the game the A's won. I couldn't believe my ears when they mentioned that Mike Piazza was coming up to bat for the A's. Did they pick him up through a trade? Freeagency? I'm sure AJ will know. Very cool seeing a game. I'll be watching a few more now.
Can anyone tell me why the Angels and A's have played a stack of games in a row now? Is that how they work it in baseball or?

Brad

Not a real expert on baseball, but from memory Piazza went from the Mets to Padres (San Diego) a couple of years back & they didnt renew his contract.

So he signed with the A's.... & I think he is getting old now, so he is DH this year so no catching....

As for the games, they always do that... two teams plays on three/four consecutive days in series....

They play groups of games to stop the continuous traveling.
At the moment the Yankees are playing a 3 game series against the Orioles.
They play day after day due to the pitching rotation being able to rest pitchers and the game not being as strenuous as basketball or football.
They sometimes play double headers with usually the same list.

Yeah was a beautiful home run he hit was glad to see that one... I don't worry abuot Oakland's early season form... we are a team of streaks and hit our straps after the all star break generally... but boy was I glad to see that Piazza home run :D

This is why we need a baseball thread...

How about a sticky at least? ;)

Piazza must be over 35 now. He's definitely getting on, but he's in great form for this part of the season. The A's have a great catcher in the form of Jason Kendall anyways(who's a bit cold batting wise). Good thing the AL has the designated hitter! Extended many a players carrear :)

Wish my Yankees would be a bit more consistant they're 2-3 and 4th in the East. No decent starting pitchers at the moment either. Crazy Pavano is going to win us todays game against the Twins though. 8-2 bottom of the 8th! Abreau is on fire today...

No not the Redsox.

Get set for a lot of pain.
Get a hold of the movie Perfect Catch and watch the despair that Bosox fans go through.

Yankees? Who? I'm still trying to find a team to support, I'm liking the Redsox, but no team has really caught my eye yet

Yeah thats how I like it...Yankees? Who? Dem Bums are my team!

RedSox aren't that bad a team these days. As long as they keep acting as a feeder for the Yankees i'm happy. ;) Depends if you want to support a division champion or just a team because of players. The Braves are doing alright so far and usually sew up the NL East. But then a again, the Twins & Mariners have strong scouting ties in Australia so they have a few Aussies on the books. Just stay away from the Cubs. Now THAT would be a world of pain. 99 years strong without a World Series! And no signs of ending it soon either :)

Mark.

yer i been watching the Soxs on Fox. Ortiz and Ramirez are two big sluggers  I enjoy watching baseball and for the past couple seasons have caught a game or 2 of the world series.

I am a Red Sox fan... started a couple yrs before the 'Curse' was ended.... mainly because Johnny Damon was a cool player....

& of course the Yankees had to sign him... *sigh*...

he instantly became uncool.... not just because he was a Yankee but also when he joined, he had to conform to the evil empire by SHAVING !!!

I love following a team known as the evil empire.

A team that has been very successful on and off the field throughout their existence. Hugh supporter base. Heaps of money. Hated by all other baseball fans.
Just like the Mighty Magpies.

Go Pies and Go Yanks.

A team?! you follow collingwood too!! :p j.k

did anyone see during the half time report of the NBA game today the Mariners pitcher (forgot his name) was 8 innings into a no-hitter then gave up a hit :( ended up with just 1 hit in 9 innings, pretty good effort!

Hey Truth, you need to checkout the movie the Perfect Game.

It is a good movie about one mans obsession with the Bosox (pity it's a romantic comedy but a laugh nonetheless).

Plot Outline:
Lindsay (Barrymore) is stuck in the middle of her relationship with Ben (Fallon) and his passion for the Boston Red Sox.

Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon. Made by the Farrelly bothers.

Was called Fever Pitch in the US.
