Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been around for a while. The reason for this is I decided it was time for an important lifestyle change. I need to lose a lot of weight and have decided to go public with my weight loss battle. I have let all of my family, friends and colleagues now about this and it's now time to let my ozcard friends know about this.

So please, read my blog, make comments offer your support etc. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site in this area so would love to get some insight from all of you.

My blog can be read here --> A year in the life of an overweight 30 year old

Thanks!!

Very brave thing to do mate! Im struggling with my weight a fair bit too, Ive managed to get back on track, to a point, and have regular gym sessions, 3 - 4 times a week, play bball again after an 8 year hiatus and am really, really watching what I eat these days! I lost 3 generations of my fathers family (including my dad) when I was 10 to heart attacks, so I am high risk in that category and with my weight makes things worse. SO having 3 young children and being 28 next week I also decided a few months ao it was time to make major lif changes!

All the best with it mate and it can only be a good thing in eveyway possible!

Mate firstly congratulations, I know all to well how you feel. I use to work in a fairl physical job, was then promoted and now have an office job. In the first 18 months I gained 25kgs. It wasn't until my wife told me we were expecting out first child that I thought about how unfit and out of shape I was. I tried a few different things, but found that support from family and friends is the best medicine. My wife asked me to write down a goal weight on a piece of paper and a time to reach it by. She pinned this on our fridge and i looked at it everytime I opened the bloody thing. Then she thought up a little plan, she gave me a present, it was a box of NRL cards, I was so keen to bust it, but she put a piece of paper on it with the same goal weight and time fram that was on the fridge, and I wasnt allowed to bust that box until I got there. Basiccly she used it to motivate me.

With all the support from friends and family, I am now fitter and healthier than ever. I am about to enter my 3rd Olympic distance triathlon, and am ready for the arrival of baby number 2.

If you need any advice, motivation or help please feel free to ask, I wish you the best of luck, and congratulate you the start of something new.

Cheers!!!!!!!

Good for you making this life change mate ! I am in my mid 30's and weigh around 85/87kg but In my early 20's I blew out to over 120kg at 177cm :( Although I have more to lose, I find the biggest battle is food and in particular saturated fats and sugars. Be positive and stick to a strick diet ! think of every kind of little job you do as an exercise (i do) and good luck reaching your goal :)

Good read Ben! Really good effort of losing over 10kg's already mate, I know the feeling of being abit overweight! About 2-3yrs ago I put on a few kg's and funnily enough it was while I was studying...studying to become a personnel trainer  But after my course had finished I really knuckled down and started sheading the kg's, I'm 188cm and was 99kg at my heaviest but didnt really have a goal weight just to go nuts on it. I've always been a pretty fit person and been able to run long distances no matter what, so naturally I started running and playing basketball twice a week helped! I experienced good and bad weeks aswell sometimes even gaining weight having done exactly the same things as previous weeks so dont get discouraged by any of that mate. I was averaging about 18km's a week with 2 games of basketball not included in that either and even got up to 45-50km's a week running, but it's deffintely the cardio and healthy eating that will get you to your goal weight rather than pumping weights and that but it still all counts! Good to see your making it fun aswell doing it with your family, takes the chore out of it! But at the end of it all I went from 99kg down to 83kg but now back up to 87kg again but mainly because I've been going to town on the weights over the last year trying to bulk up. But I'll deffinately be watching your progress mate, so dont slacken off  If you need any help or advice feel free to ask mate i'd be more than happy to try and help you out!

That's great to see you making an effort to do something man...... I'm not overweight myself, but I have been going to the gym for the last 4 months or so to build muscle & get a bit fitter.... I know it's not exactly the same thing, but if you never need any motivation just shout! :D

Btw.... was reading your blog a little, one thing I have to say is that you should not work out when you have the flu.. head colds ok, but nothing in the chest area... I've done a lot of reading since I've been going to the gym & that's one of the things everyone says not to do.

There are also a lot of websites out there that help you track your progress & keep you motivated..... a couple of sites I've been visiting myself are:

Muscle & Strength - Huge Muscle Building Site, Store & Community
Bodybuilding.com - The Future Of Bodybuilding! Huge Bodybuilding Site.

...some very informed people on the forums there & great exercise guides.

Also wanted to add a site like Recipes To Browse By Course, Ingredients, Cuisine And More - Food.com will help you out a lot with choosing healthier meals & some great new recipes if you like to cook.

great stuff mate...i used to weight 117 kgs, im down to 90.5 i turned 30 this year great to see you making a change for the better. the more weights you do the more muscle you create in turn speeding up metabolism.

good stuff Ben and good luck with it all...im trying very hard to get my weight down, in my early mid 20's to early 30 i was about 88kgs (im about 6'3") and then started doing weight training and stopped and started (taking lots of protein/bulk supplements) and am now 118kgs, im trying very hard to get to about 95-100 max as i have a more solid frame now, my biggest thing is snacking around bedtime,,,worst thing you can do! maybe we need to start a group on here to help encourage each other??

I also forgot to add that if you are doing weight training & cardio in the same workout & you are trying to lose weight..... I heard that's it's better to do your cardio AFTER your weight training because your body won't have any energy left to when you move onto your cardio & will then target your fat.

Obviously it's still very important you do a short 5-10 min cardio warmup before doing any weight training though.

Ben,

I just wish that I had your strength of character and motivation, me I am 45 and 138kg's, I turned to food and grog as a coping mechanism to deal with my PTSD, Depression and back injury (jeez i am opening up here) from matters that occurred overseas whilst serving in the ADF. Sometimes it is just hard getting out of bed in the morning; BUT, with the assistance of my case manager at DVA she is helping to find an exercise physiologist to supervise and motivate me................I should write a blog on my experiences.

Right I am going to stop now, revealed enough now.................I very, very much hope you are successful.
