Given the generous nature of people here, as shown with the original "Do a good deed" thread, I thought I would float this and see how it goes.
I work with disadvantaged children in the inner-city suburb of Kensington, in Melbourne. Many come from poor families, some are the victims of violent, alcoholic, or drug-using parents. The place I work at offers an accepting environment for these children, and tries to support them in any way we can.
Something I began doing about 18 months ago was having "card days" where I would bring in hundreds of my lesser-valued cards, divide them up into equal piles and let the kids rummage around, finding stuff they liked, and allowing them to keep any ten cards they like on the day. In these piles I'd throw in some game used cards, some lower end autos and #'ed cards as well.
I write here today because, as of last week, my card collection is all but exhausted. All I really have left is my own PC, and I have no real inclination of getting rid of things I moved heaven and earth to get my hands on.
And so, I ask you guys, if you do have cards you don't want - cards you think kids who are just starting to get into the hobby, and really, they're not going to be able to afford anytime soon, would appreciate, would you consider offering them to these kids?
As I said, I have offloaded everything other than my PC now. In the past I have thrown in some of the following cards
Jordan GU (In hindsight, that wasn't too bright)
Shaq GU
Yao GU
Shawn Marion auto
Nash GU
Nowitzki GU
Webber GU
Hill GU
Monta Ellis auto
Charlie Villanueva GU/Auto
Duncan/Yao GU
Brand patch #ed 15
Luke Ball draft pick sig
Jimmy Bartel draft pick sig
Paul Haselby draft pick sig
Farren Ray draft pick sig
Marc Murphy rookie
Grant Birchall rookie
You get the idea. There have been hundreds of other cards I could list, and, as such, I suppose you can see where my dilemma lies.
We now have upwards of fifty local children attending these card days. I basically have nothing left to give, which is why I am asking you guys if you'd help out. I'm not asking for anyone to part with anything brilliant at all - I'm not an idiot, but if you do have something you think could brighten the day of these kids, by all means let me know, as really, anything you can offer will be gladly accepted and redistributed to kids who really need something to be happy about.
This aint a load I am feeding you. I have readily given people here something they need. If you would like more details of the venue, the kids that attend, and the work we do, I am happy to provide it via PM, given privacy laws and me not wanting to contravene them in any way, shape or form (Had my fingers burned there, already)
Cheers
Brett
