Hey guys,

Went down to the Preston fair today, and although I am an AFL collector, after reading and hearing good things about the NRL card series, decided to buy and bust a NRL box and see what the fuss was all about :p

Thanks to Rif @gb70packers for hooking me up with a box.

Main hits were:

- Michael Gordon League Sensations 074/130
- Robbie Farah World Cup Heroes /250
- Wade Graham Pride & Passion, Alex Glenn P&P, Dan Hunt P&P, Braith Anasta P&P
- Jarrod Wallace M&A, Jamie Buhrer M&A

Not too bad for my first NRL box, and thought it was a really fun bust. Will definitely pick up more packets. Will upload scans later.

Cheers!

I wonder is the growing trend of AFL guys picking up the odd box of NRL stuff due to a feeling of same old with Select's AFL cards or do you think they are varying it up enough?

A combination of factors. If you look at prices, Select Series 2 goes for around $180-200 a box, whilst their Series 1 goes for around $110-$130. It just seems to be so much more value for money from ESP in terms of offering signature cards in their Series 1 (which Select does not), and having lower production runs and more interesting inserts available across both their series. That being said, I did enjoy Select Series 2 this year, but the high production run was disappointing.

I'm a kiwi and I haven't spent the time getting to know the rules of AFL to really enjoy watching it but I look over the box breaks a fair bit and quite like what I see in the Series 2 at least, obviously I haven't collected the cards in the past to get sick of them like most collectors would but the Series 1 options look very similar to the last few years.
Not bagging Select as I love a few of their NRL releases but I think where ESP really comes into their own is they are new to the game and rather than doing what they do and not listening to collectors they are listening and taking advice from what collectors want.
2013 was an awesome release but I feel this is a whole nother step up... makes me wonder what will come next

This year's AFL series has a really love it/hate it checklist. Some of the Draft Signture selections were odd, opting for second or third picks over some club's first picks. And the emphasis on Brownlow medal winners, meant it was slim pickings for non-VFL club fans. The longer print runs also hurt it because there's a disconnect between what collectors feel cards are worth and what they are actually selling for.
