I'm a bit of a fan of the SP Authentic product - I've always found it fun because it's one of the few products that is affordably priced, yet still gives you a classy design and an opportunity for some really big hits.
I'm glad to see this new version releasing though, because it seems like they have really address a couple of the criticisms I've had with the product up until now, which were:
1. Too many packs/cards per box
Previous releases had 24 packs per box and 5 cards per pack - a total of 120 cards per box with 3 hits lying amongst them. I don't know about other people, but to me it always felt like I had to dig through through a million commons before I'd finally hit something interesting.
This year UD has the layout to 20 packs per box, 4 cards per pack (80 total cards per box). That means you have one hit for every 26 base cards, instead of one hit for every 40 base cards. Should make it more fun to bust!
2. Too many carry-over inserts from previous years
Looking at recent SP Autentic products, I can't help but feel they just looked like a slight "series 2" facelift of the previous year product. The lettermen cards for example barely changed from 2012/12-2013/14. This was a big reason why I never went for last years product.
This year I feel like the base card design looks fresh (especially with the coloured parallels) while I think some of the new inserts (Futurewatch, Authentic Moments, Sign of the Times, Limited Auto Patch) look like a major change from last years product.
3. Shaq Cards
One of the first things I noticed in this product description was "Look for Lebron, Jordan, Shaq autos".
Is it just me, or is this the first time Shaq cards have been included in UD products since the switch to college licensing? For me personally, this is a big addition.
Is it just me, or has Upper Deck have really hit the spot this year with the new SP and SPx releases? I think I'm going to have to give both products a shot this year.
Another thing that intrigues me about the new SP Authentic - looking at the previous images, it looks like most (if not all) of the autographs are on card. Of course it's hard to see with these previous photos, but there are no obvious rectangles underneath the signatures to indicate they are on stickers...
If this is true and the autos are all (or even majority) on card then I'll be extremely impressed at this price point.
