2010 Holiday = Cairns

Our last Holiday away was in 2006 and so we decided it was time .

We (wife and 2 young girls) got a great deal, $79 per night for 6 nights at the Rydges Tradewinds (4.5 star) and used my well saved frequent flyer points ( a few contiki tours back in the day ) to fly the family return for free .

Sad news is that the lagoon and sugar world are closed but will have plenty of time for other things. Any advice is appreciated from those who live there or have been before.

I will be away for a week so have put trading on halt and will probably have no net access. So please post you B Davis, Hedo, Memo and Ersan GU or Autos here if u feel the urge

Leaving Wed morning at 4am and hopefully say goodbye to the cold weather for a bit.

Ask midnight_show. He used to live there before moving to PNG. They have the Cable Car to Kuranda. They have a waterski'ing man made lake thingy at Smithfield. There are a couple of waterfalls around to look at. Go for a drive up to the tablelands for a look at the lakes and craters there. Couple of wineries up there as well. Also coffee plantations where you can sample the produce..

Out of the things I just listed I have seen one crater and one waterfall and I worked on and off up there for 10 years.

I'm soooo jealous. I was supposed to go there too this year for a "family friendly" conference. However, some idiot in my professional association booked outside of school holidays. How family friendly is that! Holiday screwed for us now.

I just got back a few weeks ago from a holiday up there. I'd recommend the Scenic train and Skyrail.

We caught the train up to Kuranda Village in the morning which takes about 90 minutes and spent the day up there. There is a fair bit to do up there. They have the Australian Venom Zoo, a bird sanctuary, a butterfly sanctuary, an animal park, markets and heaps of other touristy things.

The skyrail on the way back is pretty good. It goes for a few kms over the top of the rainforest with a couple of stops to get out and have a look around at the waterfalls and the rainforest.

Good old Cairns. Your kids would've loved this waterpark called "Sugarworld". It had 4 slides and was fun as but it shut down earlier this year. I went there almost every year and was gutted when it closed!

I went there for Honeymoon 2 years ago very nice place. I recommend hire a car for a day we stopped into a lot of little sleepy beach towns. Trinity beach was our first stop not much there but there is a award winning restaurant stop in for a meal if you get a chance. other places along the path we took Palm cove, Port Douglas, Yorkys knob. Then we went inland to Mossman Gorge (Recommend) We got to the bottom of the daintree we wanted to go up to cape tribulation but makes a long day maybe if we cut some stops out. There is some majestic ocean road along the way. Also recommend the casino has a roof top bird sanctuary well worth the trip. We went to Kurranda took a bus from our hotel caught the Train up if the Waterfall is in full flight it will blow u away amazing. At Kurranda the little Irish pub at the top is a awesome great for lunch. We went to the bird and butterfly sanctuary up there then caught the skyrail back (sh*t our selves). There is a crocadile park there also although we did not get time. Also the shopping centre was good (not the abandoned one at the docks) hope that helps. Have a good holiday

I have to agree on Mossman Gorge. It was a beautiful place to visit. The Crocodile park is Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. That place is also a top day out.

Got back today, Cairns is soo quite for peak season and the hotels are still cheap. The weather was warm 27 degrees max and had 4 seasons about 3 times a day. We went to Kuranda via train and to the Butterfly Sanctuary which was good for a family activity (my girls loved it), it cost about $250 for the day incl lunch and we also went to Green Island which was great for a close reef visit but it dumped rain about an 1hr after we got there and out came the sunshine when we had to leave. Again this cost us about $280 for the day.
The remaining days were spent exploring stuff within walking distance and just relaxing (and eating - very very expensive and not as much fresh seafood as we expected) and squeezed in a swim or 2 as the lagoon was opened when we got there. Great time overall, pm me if ur keen for a link to the site i found the cheap rates on.

Thats great mate glad to hear u all had a great holiday. Did you hire a car and go for a drive around any of those places at all? Also did you come back via sky rail from kuranda? And was the waterfall in action?

We did the train up and back as we didnt think the kids would still in the skyrail, the waterfalls were pretty good but not as good as the picture on the postcards . No car hire as we wanted walk off all the extra food .
