I hate comparing Aussie sports cards to NBA, but Select need to evolve and the U.S sports cards are the benchmark. We definately dont need to be flooded with GU and Autos, but give us something. It would be sick if Scanlens made a return and had for instance 1963-1987 style parallels.
I reckon they should look into making bigger folders for starters already busted the clip on my 2008 champions folder. And i think my Warriors folder aint gonna hold out another year. but they should take advantage of what they can offer the team collectors.
Also im dissapointed that they are making another figurine series. I was under the impression that the figurines (for NRL at least) were only out for the 100th year of league. I wouldnt be suprised if select made the exact same players next year.
Why on earth would you be disappointed about another figurine set? If you don't like them then don't buy them ... I thought they were about the best thing from Select in 2008. Something new and exciting, and they look great perched on my drawers in my room. Plus they had a bit extra for the collectors with the gold figurines.
For 2009 I'd love them to have some more rare figurines by painting on the away jerseys ... number them to 500, surely it wouldn't be very hard to do - it's just changing the painting, not the model itself.
But I think it's weird to complain about a whole series when you have the option not to buy it. Of course they won't have the same players again, even Select aren't that braindead.
As far as Jersey & Patch cards in Australian Sports.........they (Select) did do it one year and I liked them. The Jersey cards STILL sell for $100AU+ and that is because Select haven't FLOODED the market like all the NBA Card Companies. I like that they have not just copied the US card companies but yeah I would like a little more variety.........I mean the same sketch & gold foil Signature Cards (again) is not going to excite anyone!
Select definitely need to produce more jersey cards. It was about the most exciting thing they've ever done, I am so surprised that they haven't done it again since 2003.
I wish upper deck or somebody would move to australia and release league cards. we want game used, dual autos. 1/1's, 1/25's, 1/50's. something, anything then the same crap every year.
Personally I don't like the idea of cards getting into the 1/25 range. I think the 2004 captain signatures were enough for me, being out of 40. Any lower than that and it would kill my Newcastle Knights collection, which is currently complete. And it does make it depressing for the not as hardout collector that they have no chance of ever completing their collection.
Great idea! The back of the holofoils are terrible. Surely the definition of cards is that they should be interesting to look at - a set of 12 cards with virtually identical backs is not going to hold your attention for more than 2 seconds.
Another idea I have thought of before is double front cards - even if it was the same photo used on both sides, have them both like the front of a card, but with wildly varying designs, and use of the photo.
i stopped with australian sport years ago due to the card manufacturers respect of the consumer, Dynamic were the worst by far especially with league...Futura were pretty good but select is IMO worse than Dynamic. I buy packs every now and then but its all boring. Bring back the Allan Border Hologram type cards and the Auto exchange cards and when the hell will they bring in game used? grrrr i hate australian sports card manufacturers. I might change my mind if they bring out a David Gillespie Auto!
Say what you will about Dynamic, but quite frankly their card design was miles better than Select. They always had interesting looking cards. Their ideas weren't so bad either, at least they tried things.
i thought id add more thoughts on this....Futera made some great cards....the 94/95 cricekt signature series autos were a fantastic idea and great how they came back with the COA. Dont know if these were the first aussie sports autos or not??? i was stoked at pulling the slater and damn near passed out with the m waugh. This is what is needed from Australian trading card companies...more ideas like the ones futera came up with....i also pulled the Allan Border Hologram too! i've currently got the whole set of the Rugby Union World Cup 15 with Eales, Campese et al AND i pulled the mark ella tribute card before the harlem globtrotters played up here in newcastle!! the only problem was the serial numbers (to 1000) but Select really need to do some past research on cards. maybe we could email them the link to this thread? but in saying all this....
As i have to all, Just dont buy the product if you sick of it! That way they will notice sales are slower/down, with complaints like this thread im sure they will make changes!
