2009-10 Select Cricket. What would you do?

what do you mean by a impact card buddy?

Futera issued a couple that I know of.
One (50 cards) with the 1996 Elite which entitled the holder on redemption to every insert card in the series. Including the "Specialists" and "Freshman" and the "Caught Marsh bowled Lillie" redemption. And a similar one (of 25 cards) in the "Decider' series.

cards redeemed all numbered the same also

i think most inserts should be numbered.

what bout dan? i dont think ive heard on your thoughts before when it comes to select? anyone else got anything they'd change?

BTW, noticed that the production run of this years inserts was much smaller than the 07-08 series. But people dont take that into consideration when selling they just think "oh yeh, lowest ratioed insert, $4 next highest $6. We should try set the market this time round in 09-10

Yeh i agree with you Tim! I have been racking my Brain about this, and looking a peoples suggestions all are valid yet i haven't come up with anything specific yet! Still thinking, guess thats why im not in the marketing dept for 'select'.

As promised!!!

I thought I would give this question a little concentrated effort in the hope that I could offer some decent suggestions and what I would really like to see from select! I am a big fan of Select’s first foray into the Cricket card market with the demise of Futera Australia and I would like to share these ‘nuggets’ with you all.

1. Do away with the sketch card! They may look great for Indiana Jones or Aragorn but they simply don’t cut it with sporting cards!
2. Let’s nip an Allan Border Medal Predictor card in the bud now! Not wanted and not appreciated.
3. And while we are in a negative mood lets not saddle up the Bradman pony again please! Let it rest, I have more respect for him than the average punter but let him be celebrated in print and memory and not another cash grab.

Ah and now to the suggestions
1. Redemptions and signatures must be valuable (or at least perceived to be) so an issue of sketch cards will just not do (did I do this already? Bear with me please!). Rookie sigs are valid as are limited run hero or legend signatures, but not in the 1000’s please IKON!!
2. While I don’t collect more than the base set of select’s football issues, I believe they do have a good case for introducing and ongoing set continuing each year. The AFL Premiership cards are both number and limited and could be a fun set to collect.
3. Other insert sets could follow the line of legends, memorable matches etc however why not change direction and include a set of soul destroying defeats, Melbourne ’83, Headingly ’85, Adelaide ’93 and Calcutta ’01 and of course Edgbaston ’05, that would at least stir some thought (and some pain. Ouch it still hurts!)
4. We are a patriotic lot so why not acknowledge the sacrifice of the Australian Cricketers that were killed in War! Ross Gregory was going to be the next best thing before perishing in a plane crash during WW2! Or lets celebrate the members of Australian crickets Hall of Fame (easy crossover from the AFL series) or Pioneering Australians like Eddie Gilbert and even Allan McGilvray or Bob Parish or even Yabba (hey Jardine Ya B$%^*£d leave our flies alone)
5. First to 1000 runs or 100 wickets etc or the lineage of test records with Charlie Bannerman to Hayden for highest score, plenty of room there.
6. Futera had a great idea with the ‘Impact Card’ and Select could have a rare ‘Master Set’ Redemption where you receive all the inserts in a special folder.

Lets acknowledge that Select are in the business of making money, we all agree about that and we will probably continue to buy the cards but ultimately we are their best customers, so lets let them know that we would appreciate:

a. Good quality card stock, as it will be appreciated and we are more likely to pay a little extra for it. Put up your hand if you have the Futera 94/95 Ashes heroes boxed set! (Oo oo me, I do) Good quality isn’t it?
b. The Photographs must be good quality and not shrouded in patriotic state colours with computer generated curls and swishes. You can be artistic look at the Elite XI from 94, fantastic looking cards, and yet even glittery foil cards have stood the test of time!

I have tried to be positive about what I would like to see but I fear that we will get a series on poor quality card stock with a dozen Man of the Match or Ashes Moments followed by 4 or 5 ‘Securing the Urn’ sketch card moments with a smiling R.T. Ponting holding up another ashes replica.

I actually like the Allan Border sketch cards :shock: I dont like how they are constantly flogging them all the time though in all cards they produce [-X

They're all great ideas, but the funniest thing I find about this thread, the more I think about it, is no matter what they dish up, we are still going to buy and love it because we are all cricket nuts

I'd love to share your enthusiasm for still buying the current product guys but i just can't bring myself to collect the new stuff. I have bought 1 packet of 08/09 cricket (it was the first pack of cricket i have bought since the 98/99 Select release) and honestly, if they brought out a quality product like they did in 97/98 and 98/99 i'd probably buy 5-6 boxes like i did in the mid-late 90s.

Have Select given any official reason as to why they are delivering such an inferior product to 10 years ago?

I must say that a fundamental flaw is that no other international teams are currently included. Whatever the reason this needs to be rectified to give the product more reach and more respect.

I second and third that I would much prefer that than a card with Pietersen/Strauss (who is their captain this week...?) holding it up

i leave them in my box during the off season!!

i dont think select is wealthy enough to then do deals with england players accossiation and then the ECB and so on.

Yeh But it could easily be added to their touring conditions as select are the endorsed Cricket Australia product!

i feel an email to select is warranted, stay tuned!!!

If we can't have overseas players then more great players from the past signatures,e,g,
Bob Sinpson,Ritchie Benaud,Bill Lawry,Ian Redpath,Bob Cowper etc

Just fired off a page letter to Select asking about the selection process and production details of there card issues. It will be interesting to see what their reply will be!

It took less than 3 mintues for their reply!

some great ideas here guys. im a huge fan of Futera so i love the international players idea. how about lower level inserts are all players including international players but only aus players to sign the signature cards. also past greats signatures is a must, atleast 2 per series, numbered to about 200. absolutely need inserts to be numbered, all inserts. select are very lazy with this, they should do this in all their sports, not just cricket. all numbered inserts in cricket, afl, nrl and soccer, come on Select. i would love to see an elite 11 style insert set with players from all international teams, like a world 11, kinda like the specialists set Futera did back in the day. in thinking of new ideas for cricket collectors, they really need to go down the game used path, a piece of pups bat when he scored a century, a piece of haddins gloves, a piece of mcdonalds helmet when we got hit in the head in his first test a piece of the ball from when mitch johnsone took a 5 for, they have to do this in the next series. game used gets people excited and Select just arnt capitalizing on this huge possible market here in oz at the moment.
im like some of you, no matter how bad the cricket release is from Select i will still buy a box or two, only because no-one else does cricket. but i wont keep supporting Select with cricket cards if they dont start to show some interest in collectors like us and our thoughts of what we want in a release!!!
