To tell you the truth I thought this draft was going to be one of the top 3 drafts ever. Now with Rose injured, Beasley never getting anywhere near his potential and mayo only ever really becoming a half decent player that never really wows you, I've all but given up my previous thoughts.
You would 100% without a doubt have to say that Kevin Love is the best player to be drafted that year!!!! Followed by his college team mate and the player that was picked a spot above him Westbrook, which pains me to say because I hate the way he approaches the offensive game.
There were a lot of players that I thought would become very very solid NBA players and maybe future all stars that never quite panned out. You have guys like Gallinari who I know is injured but still has never shown he was worth a 6th pick. Eric Gordon who I thought was going to be a steal at 7th, Bayless, Randolph, Joe Alexander (who remembers that guy) freakishly athletic.
You also have the surprises from the draft like Hibbert who I thought would never be able to adapt to the speed of the NBA, Ryan Anderson, Serge Ibaka, Batum, George Hill, Pekovic, Deandre Jordan and Goran Dragic (had to put him in there being a phx fan)
What I'm wondering is what is your take on the talent from the 08 draft? I feel that there were obviously a lot of steals in the draft now that I look back on it with the likes of Hibbert at 17th etc.
Still not a bad draft class at all, I mean Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka, Roy Hibbert, Nicolas Batum, Ryan Anderson, Goran Dragic, Derrick Rose and Jordan (albeit DeAndre) sounds alright to me even with an injured Rose. There was plenty of busts though as you mentioned and guys who turned out not so worthy of their draft pick (Beasley )... what even happened to Alexander? I remember he was a possibility for the Slam Dunk Contest but Rudy Fernandez was chosen above him by fans I'm pretty sure.
I would pick Westbrook over Kevin Love any day of the week!
Love has been just as injury prone as Rose (just not at the same career threatening level).
Sure Love has put up the best numbers of anyone out of that draft recently, but it doesnt generate wins or playoff berths for the Twolves. And so far i havent seen him make any of his teammates perform any better.
Westbrook allows his teammates to play better. The early playoff exit showed that, no-one making plays for Ibaka and him shooting a horrible percentage showed that.
But Westbrook is by far the most complete player of the 08 Draft, aside from his spectacular offensive game he plays defense at a championship level, Love doesnt play defense at all (aside from the ton of defensive rebounds he gets).
Overall i think the 08 Draft was pretty strong, with a lot of players still playing big roles on their respective teams. Just not as much superstars as we probably expected.
And just think if Memphis weren't stupid and took harden, OKC were going to pick thabeet!!!!
I think OKC should thank Memphis because they now have them both and did select that bust thabeet!!!
