You are right its through trades, well at least in Childress' case. Hawks got a 2nd rounder and a trade exception in return. The value of the trade exception is dependant on how much Childress is making in his first year.

Yeah its a risk, chewing up the whole MLE on someone who may only play 100 games or less total over the two years. The Hawks are in win now mode though, their cap will be ugly in a few years when Joe Johnson starts to get worse but still gets $20 mill per season.

Yeah but the Suns don't have Dwight Howard in their Division. I think this is the main reason for pursuing Shaq. The Hawks don't have the size to handle DH which showed in the 2nd round. They are just probably looking for 20 mins a game and the ability to slow down DH.
