Michael Kent Benson grew up in New Castle, Indiana and was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1973. He elected to attend local Indiana University, playing for famous college coach Bobby Knight. In his freshman year, the 6'11" center helped the Hoosiers win the Big Ten title. As a sophomore, Benson and the Hoosiers went unbeaten until they lost to Kentucky in the Elite Eight by two points. Benson's contribution was a mammoth 33 points and 23 rebounds.
In his junior year, alongside seniors Quinn Buckner & Scott May, Benson and the Hoosiers went unbeaten and won the National Championship. He was awarded the Helms Foundation Player of the Year and also the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. He also made first team All American. The following season with Buckner and May graduated Benson was named Big Ten Player of the Year and All American again, however the team didn't make the NCAA Championship. Throughout his college career he averaged 15.3 points, 9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
In 1977, Benson was selected with the #1 pick overall in the Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. Taken ahead of future All-Stars Otis Birdsong, Marques Johnson & Walter Davis and also future Hall of Famers Bernard King & Jack Sikma.
Benson was two minutes into his NBA career when he elbowed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the abdomen who retaliated by punching and subsequently concussing Benson. Kareem broke his hand and would be out for two months. Benson had an underwhelming rookie season, averaging 7.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 18 minutes however improved to 12.3 points, 7.1 rebounds & 2.5 assists as a sophomore.
Benson was then traded to Detroit midway through his third season with a first round pick for Bob Lanier. He spent over 6 seasons with Detroit and after putting up good numbers initially he fell down the pecking order as the Pistons developed into championship contenders. They then traded him to Utah with Kelly Tripucka for Adrian Dantley and two future second round picks. It was the 2nd time in his career he was traded, both by teams looking to "get over the hump" and contend for the title.
He spent one year coming off the bench in Utah. The Jazz then traded him to Cleveland with Dell Curry for Darryl Dawkins and Melvin Turpin. He would only play twice for Cleveland before heading to Italy. After spending one season in Italy he opted not to see out his contract despite the opportunity to play for another five years and elected to retire instead.
He has since been involved in life insurance, estate planning, car auctions and The College Network.
He was inducted into the Indiana University Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
As an NBA player he averaged 9.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 23 minutes across 680 regular season games.
