My first break, as this is a fairly obscure product made up of other obscure products it’s pretty wordy. Please feel free to skip to the pictures.
Worlds Greatest Card Chase – Action and Entertainment is one of the few non sports products in Dave and Adams list of freebies with a $75 purchase. The few reviews I could find were mainly negative but it was free (postage excluded) so I lowered my expectations and hoped for the best.
Each box contains 16 assorted packs from multiple manufacturers with the gimmick that you have a very small chance of getting a redemption card which can be exchanged for high value trading cards or potentially a Spiderman #1 comic. The redemption odds start at 1 in 1200 boxes and get worse from there, plus the redemptions are now expired.
There are also Baseball and multisport versions in the Card Chase series which makes the contents of the box a bit perplexing. As you can see from the pictures the box contained three packs of wrestling cards from 2nd tier promotion TNA, 2 packs of Minor League baseball cards and a pack a of Auto racing cards. While the wrestling cards are technically non sport I can’t see many non sports collectors being excited to find them much less minor league baseball.
TNA Impact – Inaugural Edition 5 Cards Per Pack x 2
Below average looking wrestling cards.
TNA Cross the Line - 5 Cards Per Pack
A better looking set of TNA wrestling cards, still not great but better than the above.
Tristar Projections 2008 – 8 Cards Per Pack
These are actually quite nice looking cards and my pack featured a foil parallel base card. But still they’re minor league baseball cards.
Tristar Projections 2008 (High Number) – 5 Cards Per Pack
The same as the above only no parallel and less cards. Plus my pack was a card short.
X-Files Season 2 – 6 Cards Per Pack
Theoretically this a good find relative to the other packs but... It’s a UK pack which has 2 less cards per pack and no parallels or inserts!
Independence Day – 6 Widevision Cards Per Pack
I guess if you liked the movie these are OK. The image quality of cards with scenes from the movie leaves something to be desired though.
VR Troopers – 5 Card Puzzle Pack
VR Troopers was apparently a kids TV show looking to cash in on the Power Rangers craze. These are slightly unusual as each card is a little larger than normal and each pack contains a complete 5 card puzzle. The puzzle type is identified on the pack so there are no suprises.
Power Rangers: The Movie – 6 Card Pack
These are actually less interesting than the VR Troopers cards.
Jonny Quest – 5 Card Pack
Animated show for kids. The cards are in FRENCH!
Shrek 2 – 6 Card Pack
A surprisingly dull design for a major license. Like X-Files this is a UK version with less cards per pack. Each pack contains a foil base parallel but all the inserts from the US release are gone.
Richard Petty Racing – 4 Cards Per Pack
These cards are from Food Lion which seems to be a US chain of supermarkets. Each pack contains 3 sequentially numbered cards and a checklist shipped in a clear pack.
Real Monsters – 6 Cards Per Pack
Another animated childrens show. At least the cards are in English.
Reboot – 6 Cards Per Pack
Another animated childrens show. This one is computer generated but the 3d characters look terrible.
Guinness Book of Records – 10 Cards Per Pack
My second favourite pack from the box. Each card features an image of a Guinness world record and blurb about the record on the back. Weirdly the back features a quiz where the answer can almost always be found in the blurb above the quiz. Still after a mountain of crappy kids shows these were a welcome change.
Dinosaurs Attack – 5 Cards, 1 Sticker and 1 Piece of Gum Per Pack
The gum from 1988 was unsurprisingly a bit hard. Each card features a quite gory original image of dinosaurs attacking people. The art is not astonishing but I really like these. Definitely the highlight of the box.
Overall as a freebie it’s not a complete disaster, at the original $20 price point I’d be pretty ticked off. It’s clearly a collection of whatever packs could be acquired cheaply with no thought to quality or even appropriateness. The wrestling cards and baseball cards are an odd inclusion but it’s probably better than yet more packs from forgotten kids shows. I’m pretty new to trading card collecting so it was interesting to see a number of different products but obviously YMMV.
