Another Select rant.....

Top Prospects same but i dont think anyone is complaining about those cards unless maybe one of the players didnt play many games etc but at the end of the day you want a signature from every club right.

I dont agree with this, some teams shouldve had 2 or 3 this year and if that came at the expense of some of the teams missing out well so be it. Manly is the main one that comes to mind- DCE, Foran and Hopoate wouldve been great. Sharks couldve easily had 2 if not 3 also.

i would love to see panini or upper deck or topps take over afl cards just seeing what they do with NBA and NFL cards is amazing and could just imagine the cards from AFL legend autos patches it would be insane

UD Exquisite would be awesome! Topps and Panini, no thanks if they are gonna kill it with those awful sticker autos

I could be wrong here.

2011 Champions..... they add signature cards people still not happy ?

2011 strike ...... they include club player of year and team of the year that we missed last year people still not happy ? Fair enough same old club player and team of the year. Top Prospects same but i dont think anyone is complaining about those cards unless maybe one of the players didnt play many games etc but at the end of the day you want a signature from every club right.

2011 Select start making cards in china first set bit dodgy this was always going to happen. Second set strike and quality is great. Fair enough both sets there was few common cards not right the odd insert here and there but ever card they will replace for you ! I'm thinking next year things are looking great for select. Get it right in china and we could be looking at some awsome cards next year.

As for the staff at select. Even thow at times they have left me angry you have to look at it like this. Imagine you get piles and piles of emails letter's phone calls EVERY day with angry people mostly people acting and be stupid. Would you get upset ? Fair enough somethings they have said is crazy but is a NICE phone call email to hard ? I've been to select many many times and there phone doesnt stop calling with people trying to scam them or going of over nothing like really do you have to get upset over few common cards ? I could go on all day about thousand different things i just think we are being to hard on them.

P.S lol do you really have to get on there facebook page going of when a kind email or call will get you what your after most of the time ?

Champions 2011 - they had no choice but to add signatures. Just ask how much stock of 2010 they are still sitting on.

Strike 2011 - overall nothing wrong with this set but why do you think there are so many NBA guys on OCT - after 10 years they are not interested in collecting another set of CPOTY.

My beef is not really at the cards. God knows we have done that thread a hundred times. My problem here is with the attitude they take towards the collecting community. The stories i retold in the initial post are not from Di but from someone higher in the chain that should have a better idea of the industry which the operate.

Nath form Newcastle is a Baptist minister and are really really nice guy. It took him 2 phone calls to even get to speak to someone about donating some cards to little kids and they told him to take a hike.

I used to work for the Commonwealth Bank - so yeah i have lived it. Im not being critical of their customer service. The stories in my initial thread are from upper management.

How can you have shaker fries without an El Maco? I was very disappointed when i saw it was a McFeast. El Maco and McRib are the best special burgers of all time :kick:
I am gonna load up on those shaker fries sachets before they disappear for another 5 years :(

You guys completely hijacked this thread.

I dont think anyone can really complain about the customer service from select. they have always been extremely helpful and prompt responding to my emails and fixing any issues.
I do agree that from the top they have to use a bit more imagination in the subsets for their cards tho. CPOTY and TOTY have been played to death. that been said i think they did turn a corner with the 2011 champions set. they brought out new subsets(rookies and rookie sensation) which was good to see.
they own the monopoly of nrl and afl trading cards so y would they change? especially when their target demographic being kids and their parents are very unlikely to send complaints about a couple of common cards.
and in relations to the lack of high end chase cards...while they would be good to see circulating in the nrl cards sets im kind of glad because my wife would pound me spending those kind of big $$$ to try and track them down haha

also boys im more of a triple cheese burger man

I personally doubt that they negotiate with every single player to produce a card of them, with different rates, etc. This would be covered in the licence fee to the NRL, the NRL has the rights due to the collective agreement that every player signs. If Select agreed to terms with every single player on a fee there would never be a single set produced!

No I'm not talking about commons or mid-level inserts. I'm talking about the signature cards. I'm sure they'd love to have the best of the best in each release with signatures but sometimes its just not econimically viable. I have no doubt the players who do signings demand fees and get paid accordingly.

You're taking a very narrow minded view on business, I think if the product is rubbish and there are heaps of complaints each year and dissatisfied customers, then they are not a successful company. Just look around here to see Select's name is mud, is that how you would like your company to be perceived?
The big tobacco companies are reviled in public by the majority of people, their name is also mud, but they happily continue to make the same products and churn out their multi-million dollar profits. Just because you're not viewed in the best light by certain parts of the market doesnt mean you're not successful at what you're doing.

I dont think everyone has had the same positive experiences with them as you. I have had more negatives than positives. Maybe you cant complain but i definately can.
P.S Owen if it wasnt for your hamburger theory.......El Maco, That is all :woot:

fair enough..i guess i can speak for myself on that one then. but yeh i havent had any dramas gettin a response or help from them

i feel like some maccas now tho...

I have to say that every time I have contacted Select the staff have been more than helpful aswell as pleasant and efficient with my requests.
I think they have moved forward with the Strike release in that they openly admitted that quality with 2011 Champs was an issue and have improved that. Design is great too - team sets look fantastic together. Compensation with the missing set last year in that they have doubled CP and TY (and yes I know it's are getting a tired subset). They can't improve every aspect in one release and I live with optimism that a new chase subset will add to the improvements on the release(s) next year

Being a person who started getting right into the whole 'footy card' things as a 9 year old kid in 1994, going hardcore for 2 years then stopping in 1996, then basically ignoring the whole scene until this year, i have an idea or 2.

Subsets-
Have a look at something like Series 2 of 1994, subsets galore, "Dynamic Dream Team", "Meninga Tribute set", "Best of the Blues", "Mighty Maroons", "State of Origin superstars", "Ten Year Tributes", "Try Machine"....

1995 Series 2 set... "Hot Prospects", "100 Years of League", "Speedsters", "Dynamic Double Plays", "Frontline Enforcer", "Origin Men of Steel" etc etc....

I think this is the kind of thing Select need to be doing.

Subsets that dont have to be expensive gold embossed "4 or less per box" things.... just simple themed subsets with cool visual art, inserted at 1 every few packs or whatever.

Give the kids some interesting sets to aim at completing.

Think outside the "Club Player" and Team Player" rut this company seem to be in.

IMO the Dynamic footy cards of the mid 90's did it perfectly, Select could learn a thing or 2 by looking back at these releases.

ALSO... do what Dynamic did in the mid 90's and release a 9 card set of the previous Premiership winners, with one side of the card being a highlight of the finals series, and the reverse side of the card being part of the big photo of the team with the Premiership trophy... all 9 cards put together make one big photo.

Its not that hard!

Great ideas mate
i hope ozcardtrader member *production* takes that post to the next meeting!!!
Also move the cpoy, toty and award winners to an end of season set along side the premiers set. it makes them more relevent putting them out in the same year!!!

maybe there arent that many complaints each year? as someone mentioned, the target is kids/for kids and id say they are the majority of buyers (who i highly doubt care anough to complain), leaving a small section of disgruntled hard-core collectors. complaints from a minority is just a part of business...

Hardcore collectors account for about the same amount spent as lets say 30 kids. So 1 complaint from a hard core collector = 30 complaints from kids who don't really give a crap about looking after the cards and don't know what they are looking at in terms of imperfections in cards straight from a pack.

Exactly and the hardcore are here to stay, kids come and go.
I also think they should look at the present (around the world) and not to the past. 90s were my least favourite decade for cards.

i think Select need to be more interactive
use their Facebook page and ask questions so we can answer, use their minipolls on their website to collect info.
Even bring out a monthly email newsletter and tell us whats going on, how their production runs work, give us an insight on how Select works.
If they do this and we have more on an understanding on what goes on in Select. We the collectors might be more understanding.

maybe thats the point? kids come and go, which is why they focus on new releases. obviously the kids that go are replaced by new kids, meaning they dont have to care so much about what theyve released in previous years because they have a whole new group of collectors...

How do they focus on new releases exactly? They could release a checklist for the next 5 years its that predictable.
I dont care what they do with Champions tbh, just make the 2nd series more appealing to long term collectors.

Not sure that Dynamic should be held as a model of success given some of the things they did :p

Seriously though. today's kids are tomorrow's hard core collectors so they need to be catered for.

Interestingly there is a debate on the NBA Board about what has gone wrong with their cards - a proliferation of autos, game used, parallels etc etc.

I wouldn't want to see a tonne of multi-parallels but say if they had 300 normal top prospects and a slightly modified top prospect numbered to 10 - that would be cool.

And you could have 100 redemption cards per series redeemable for a game used card

And stop archiving the #1 cards!

I think you would have to say the vast majority of the hobby release goes to us collectors and not kids.

For example I know of no newsagent in Newcastle that has any packs for sale.
