My knees have been gradually getting worse and worse. I'm not overweight 6ft and 96 kilos (well maybe i could lose 2 kg). It's gotten to the stage where they are just sore when i'm not actually standing up or being active. The right one is clicking with pretty much each step and the left one is just constant agony. My 15 month old son poked one and i felt like i had been stabbed under the kneecap and up the outside of my leg. Managed to make it most of the way through work today but had to knock off early as limping on both legs is pretty fail. Any ideas on what could be wrong. Trying to get into a doctor this week:mad:.

All my joints get locked up and crack and creak  can't give you any advice as I haven't figured it out myself. There was a few guys in the old threads talking in depth about pain and surgery options and stuff, have to get them in here, dig ul th old thread  good luck finding it!

This year I have started occasionally getting sore knees and they now crack a lot when they are slightly bending. Im constantly on my feet playing sport so not really a surprise but could be a worry as Im still young? Not too sure..

I have knee problems but nothing like that. 2 miniscle (spelling) tears and damaged ligaments in one knee. I get pain but not when poked. Jolts and twisting gives me most pain.

I'm 27 and have a very similar problem

Except mine is caused by a total of 13 knee dislocations over 2 knees over 13 years.
If the pain is under the kne cap, it could've an inflamed acl ligament. If it is one the sides, it could be medial and posterial ligaments.

Not necessarily torn, but inflamed. Until you see a doctor (who will probably just send you to a physio) you need to do 'RICE' - rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Even if it is some other problem, it won't hurt.
Then once you see a physio, treat the excersises they give you seriously as they WILL help a lot!

I am 6'1 and 90kg so very similar to you and I play basketball now, but only with the help of a mammoth knee brace on.
I also have kids, 3 daughters under 5 so o know it's hard sometimes to find the time to rest, but do whatever you can, it will help.

Knee problems = check
You will find lots who do have problems with their knees mate.
If you can get into see a specialist then you are doing well and if you don't get the response you are looking for, then get a second opinion.
Bloke I work with saw one specialist who said nothing wrong with ya, so he said to this surgeon so you will give me a clean bill of health to go back to work at which the surgeon baulked.
Second specialist told him his knee was stuffed and would need constant physio to get it better.

Hope you get it fixed up soon mate.

I had orthotics (inserts for your shoes) specially made for me....they make a plaster cast of your feet.....cost about $400. If you do decide to head down this path....go to a proper orthotist.....not a podiatrist.
The inserts (which I wore every day for 7 years) fixed my knee....had new ones made 2 years ago because I had achilles soreness in both feet for about a year....once again the inserts have solved the problem.

Rhys,
I assume this is a biomechanical prob as you'd made no mention of past trauma or physical loads you put on it each day ie sport and work. What would be more helpful is to tell me when you get the pain, be it in knee flexion, extension, bending down to ehlp the kids, doing stairs etc. Also need to know whether the pain is front, back or either side, in the morning/evening or whether time of the day doesn't change it.
GP will either X-ray, prescribe anti-inflammatories/pain killers or send you on. I suggest you get a biomechanical assessment by Chiro, Physio or podiatrist. Often clicking is caused by the knee cap not tracking evenly in the groove it's supposed to be in or can be overtight tissue flicking over a bony prominence.
Hope that gives you a start on it. PM if you need to know more

- the clicking is probably due to a tear in your meniscus ( which will need to be shaved back to its smoothness by a surgeon).
- the other knee is probably hurting as you are compensating for the R) knee
- 6ft and 96kg - i'd say you are overweight. this actually gives you a BMI of 29 - overweight....another 4-5kgs and you'd be labeled obese.

any hoot, take some anti inflammatories for a few days, ice them and take it easy, then go and see your GP, they might refer you onto an orthopaedic surgeon......

Gday bud
I have had two Knee recos and several Arthriscopes over my Football Career and it sounds like you may need a bit of a scrape or cleanout on 1 and the other could be a bit more serious.
Usually the Clicking is a tear in the Cartlidge and If its swelling and Locking then could be more damaged than just a tear I am sorry to give you the bad news and I am not a Doctor just speaking from experience.
I think a specialist will have you sorted in know time.
Cheers
Van

I'm only 26 or 27 (who keeps track?) so quite pissed off that everything is breaking down

I know the feeling, I'm 28 this year and my back has been screwed with bulged discs etc for about 7-8 years (damn landscaping + a-hole of a boss), the pain it caused has gone from feeling like I have a stake in my lower spine all day to just painful when moving certain ways etc. I also get the occasional fluid build up in my knees behind the knee cap, that can be agonising at times.

Your best going and seeing your GP or whatever Doctor and possibly getting some scans I think before anything else.

I feel you pain chief I snapped my right ACL mid last season had a reco and still doing physio to get it right. If you do see a specialist see if you can get into sports med SA

The best thing you could do would be rest and ice. And if you can find one a pressure bandage is always good. Takes away my pain when I play sport.

Mate, thats a bummer. I had a knee reconstruction after blowing my acl in 1996. Unfortunately it ruined the basketball career and now im due to get both of em done. Im 6'4" and i used to play at 85-92kgs (now im 103kg... yes need to loose a little). See a few surgeons and if you dont feel comfortable dont go ahead. My doc was a bit of a butcher and I should have gone to someone else. A good question for the doc would be "if you dont do the operation who do you recommend?"... other than that see a good physio and try and strengthen the muscles around the knee (speak to the physio first)...that helps me to this day... If anyone has experience with the LARS system feel free to let me know. Might go down that road for the new kness!!
