2024 Elite NRL Official Thread

So it seems the consensus is that the Breakouts are heavily unpopular - at least as a 1 per 3 box "hit" that replaces an auto or patch. TLA/TGI if you're listening I propose a very simple solution that allows you to put an auto/patch in every box:

Mojo Team Colour - /100 Team Set

You could either make these a "mojo pack" like the old days or a single card redemption - /100 would allow them to fall at 1 per 5 boxes, meaning every box could have a "second mojo" and the case hits that would normally appear in the two mojo-less boxes would go back to being the "main hit" of the box, filling the spot where the Breakout/Club Champion/unsigned box hit of the year would be.

I understand the Mojo team sets were polarising especially for individual player collectors but IMO they were half the fun of the mojos anyway. Oh and please do 9 player common sets with no mojo checklists

I like the concept of the Breakouts. Something different and a well designed, simple card. If the popularity isn’t there because these cards aren’t fetching $$, I see that as more of a blight on a money hungry collecting community.

And I base this on reading FB pages where all you hear is whining, ‘I got a Breakout, dud box, not making my money back’. The hobby isn’t, never has been and never should be (As a collector) about making money. Everyone wants to get value from a box and get that big hit but if you can afford a box, you are already winning.

A set like this offers an affordable option to put together a numbered set covering all teams and NRLW.

I think the Breakouts would have been a better option as a Priority variant than the Reflections.

I don’t mind the concept of an auto or patch per box, as long as they pick reasonable players.

Select had this spot on. A Top Prospect / Young Guns signature per box. I think they are 1:3 boxes at the moment. Have both YG’s as signatures and slightly increase the production run to say 175 per card and you would be good to go.

I don't think it's unfair to feel dudded by the Breakout hit, whether you're a "true collector" or not. When 7/10 boxes in a case have an auto or patch guaranteed and you end up with one of the three that don't that obviously makes your hunt for your team's high-end hits a lot harder.

I agree that the Breakouts are a good idea, just probably at the "one or the other per box" level of the Reflections gold or Pink Diamond. Last year's Club Champions is about as good an idea you can have for an unsigned case hit and they were still polarising. The main takeaway is moreso that there's enough autos in the set that you can put one in every box and not have double or even triple hitter boxes as far as the big stuff goes

It depends on the context of feeling dudded. Those who tend to complain are only interested in buying a box to flip the contents, therefore if they feel they don’t make money, they complain. Those who are in it for collecting have a better appreciation and understand that while they have not hit big, they can trade for what they need.

I don’t think a box without an auto makes the high end hunt harder but it depends what you consider high end. Personally, only case hits and above are high end.

The Club Champions were not a case hit, they were also 1:5 boxes and I agree, great concept and nice card.

As I mentioned, I am all for an increase in YG’s so there is an auto per box however, collation is an issue with plenty of boxes having two autos and other boxes none.

Not including the dual autos from the US boxes, there are 5,950 signature cards available. The general production run is 660 cases (760 this year with US Elite). Therefore, adding a second YG per team or raising the production run of the YG’s would cover it.

As a primarily Souths collector I was annoyed at the breakout being the hit in my box given it was Titans NRLW meaning it was already hard to move as is, but I also wasn't even interested in the Hawkins one given he won't even be at Souths next season. Mind you my box also pulled through with the Black Diamond but not every Breakout is going to align with the 3 "case hits" that fall in the Mojo slot like that (although they could if TLA wanted).
If my maths is right the auto YGs currently fall at 3.3 per case, so yeah a slight increase would fill that gap.
Personally above all I would like to see team mojo sets return. My proposition is more of a 2 birds 1 stone deal. Team collectors get the ability to pull their whole team instead of hunting singles and individualised colours would look nicer as a set for most teams than red/blue/green/black

Unfortunately, tla is a company, there to make money and profits, its about player contracts, cards were there ticket into the nrl, they dont give a flying fuck about about collectors, otherwise they would have a drug and alcohol policy in force to combat all the fuck ups.

Just having a senior whinge. When this years elite was released and certain dealers received their stock which was then opened and put up for sale, why are they allowed to dictate the initial prices of the cards. Then within a month of the release their asking price has has not changed, but you can buy the cards on eBay for half the price if not less.Just one example is Toby Couchman young gun auto.Started around the $150.00 mark🤔.Last week one was sold for $29.95 on ebay with one bid.Thats it,whinge over.Keep collecting. 🙂

Pretty valid whinge, senior or not.

I think that with NRL cards, Elite in particular, the prices are always overs and then drop sharply. The initial prices used to hold for 3-4 weeks but now, less than two (unless it is Walsh, Cleary, Paps, Murray etc).

The issue is the flippers. They buy box after box (I know of a person who bought six cases) and then dump what they don't want. This floods the market and drives prices down, right down. When Select had the license, Steve Wang was the primary distributor. He ensured that after an initial period, product was only drip fed onto the market and therefore the market was not overwhelmed and prices never went exceptionally high, or low.

My advice, particularly with higher numbered insert cards (anything over /25 these days), be patient and wait. You will get what you want at a reasonable price after the initial onslaught!

I really like the Breakout inserts as well, enough that I'm working on completing the set.

Im a sucker for landscape-oriented cards, the fact there's one per team, numbered, and have a clean sharp design, they tick all the boxes for me.

One thing I would have added is a small foiled signature of the player, as a way of 'signing off' on their endorsement of the 'breakout' player they've chosen.

I thought the Breakouts were a good idea. It's a bit of a throwback to the 94 Captains Choice cards.

It's just a shame they stuffed these two up and had the rookie player endorsing the senior player as the breakout 🤦‍♂️
