Do we restrict membership on OZCT for new signups to Aus/NZ only?

It seems the majority of issues of late are caused by OS members who join.

Not a decision, just looking for feedback.

Personally, I feel that any overseas member should always be welcome.

However, their expectations must be realistic (without imposing double standards)

An example would be postage timing and cost

A high-end card can be sent within Australia registered express for about $15 whereas it is about $50 or more to most overseas countries. It makes us look extremely silly but it is no fault of the Australian member.

A normal mail within Australia takes less than 1 week to arrive but can take 6 weeks to arrive in some overseas destination. Again no fault of the local member but makes us look like clowns.

Not sure how to approach this but obviously there are differences.

Rather than restrict altogether perhaps overseas members should be referred by a member of long standing who is active on the forum

Its a pity that the minority wreak it for the majority.

Its a tough one. Perhaps they need an introduction from another member like you have to do at a lot of golf clubs.

While on the subject whats the rules around under 18 members? We had a couple kids trying to pull some scams in the AFL section yesterday. Im a member on Net54baseball and they dont let anyone under 18 sign up.

Would be good if we could encourage or have new members post in the welcome/introduction section, like it used to be. Just helps establish a connection and we get to know a little bit about the new collector.

Have to also agree with Owen. Lately, and more often than not in the AFL section, we have had too many new members who just spam through outdated threads, offer ridiculous offers and have no concept of standard etiquette on the site. Often, this is a result of their young age, but maybe there's something we can do to ensure site rules are followed?

Well you can report any threads and we can clean them up.

If we stopped anyone under 18 then members like girds would never have been allowed (is that a bad thing? ;))

Keep suggestions coming, i know it is annoying and I would like to make this place have transactions that are successful 100% of the time.

What are your thoughts on enforcing new members to post a welcome thread and introducing themselves?

I agree with that,

I see HEAPS of new members go right to making sale / trade threads, or want threads, but have not taken the time to pop in and say hi to anyone.... and introduce themselves.
It really is not that hard to do..

As for restricting to both AGE and LOCATION, I for one disagree.

Everyone deserves a chance and place to learn.

Over seas members often would bring cards here that some of us may need for set chases etc, and there are many successful and reliable members here from OS already, why punish others that may be reliable etc just because of a few bad eggs.

I am sure everyone here knows how to spot and deal with scammers and time wasters by now.

I guess thee same goes for the under 18's

I feel the deserve a chance... being here and guided by existing members is a great way to learn for them.

It is actually VERY AMUSING watching some of these threads as they pop up (like yesterdays)

Whytake that entertainment away from us!

If use made it for 18+ then i wouldnt be allowed dont do that! :P
Some wreck it by being silly u know but not all are the same yes iv made mistakes but everyone does u take it in ur stride and make sure u dont do it again iv never ripped someone off and if i do a trade and it takes me awhile to post cards of (with the other party okaying it) i usually chuck in a freebee if the other person needs it as afl collectors have done it to me

But as for making it just aussies and kiwis i actually agree theres quite a few threads about overseas traders/seller/buyers who scam people or dont protect the cards right etc etc i know theres people here that do it but i think itd just be better thankfully i havent dealt with overseas ones but all the stories i read dont think i will

I don't think we should become a "gated community" and should welcome one and all enthusiastically, unfortunatley there will always be some bad eggs. The responsibility should be on the members to advise admins of issues and admins to make the tough decisions.

I would like to see new members forced to first post in the Intro section and not have access to the Sell / Trade threads until they have done 10 posts worthy of granting them admission or similiar.

Don't think overseas members should be prevented from joining. Unfortunately, as has been said, a couple seem to ruin it for the majority.
It would be good if there was some kind of regulation for younger members to be 'watched over' when they first join, but then that onus is on us to report to mods if anyone is causing trouble. Or causing too much annoyance with silly offers and such things :cautious:

At nearly 5,000 posts in I might still not have access to sell and trade threads.

Very true - we do certainly have some very good members here that are or started under 18.

Just looking at Net54's policy their view is that if your buy/selling/trading cards then your entering a contract and you can only enter into a contract is your over 18.

That's the USA of course.....been a while since i have done Law101 so i cant quite remember if that's the case in the land of Oz.

Without the US we wouldn't have cards. All can come until they do something wrong. I'm always wary of those with 0/low feedback and those who don't have a sig.

I don't have a sig just cause i'm too lazy to make one lol. I think everyone should be allowed but international members need to accept postage costs and times rather than trying to get it sent cheaper and asking why their item hasn't arrived yet.

I always felt that OCT was the most welcoming, friendly and non-discriminating trading card forum on the net.
Sure, I've met some xenophobic ones, but overall it has always appeared to me that the majority didn't care where I am from, just that I love collecting cardboard the way they do.
For the admin to bring it up though... it's seriously a huge disappointment.
Is there such a strong anti-OS sentiment here as to even justify such a suggestion?
