2012 AFL Off-Season Thread

Compensation picks ruin the integrity of the draft IMO.....it will be even worse once we see teams getting picks for losing free agents.

Backing up my argument.....comment from an agent on the AFL website -

Abolish compo picks: agent
By Jason Phelan9:06 AM Wed 10 Oct, 2012
AFL PLAYER manager Marty Pask has called on the AFL to abolish the compensation picks that he believes are hindering the free agency process.
Under the system, in play for the first time this year, clubs that lose a player to free agency will receive a compensation pick for the loss of that player with the value of the pick determined by an AFL formula.
That formula is based on the net loss or gain of players from a club and Pask argues that a club like St Kilda, that has lost big fish Brendon Goddard to Essendon, will become a non-player in free agency so as not to devalue the compensation it will receive once the period ends on October 19.
The Saints are expected to receive pick No.13, which must be used at November's NAB AFL Draft, for Goddard's loss, while Port Adelaide will be hoping for similar compensation for the losses of Danyle Pearce (to Fremantle) and Troy Chaplin (to Richmond).
The Power has signed free agent Angus Monfries from the Bombers, but protected its compensation pick by trading pick No.48 for the former Don.
"It's got to go, yeah, it has to go," Pask said of the compensation system on AFL.com.au's Trade Radio.
"That goes against probably what free agency says. We then can't say, 'We'll look after you around the back and support the football club'.
"It's almost against the spirit of free agency.
"These clubs now that are waiting on their compensation picks, theoretically they're not going to do anything for quite some time.
"It's creating a backlog of players that aren't able to move."
Pask manages former Bulldog Brian Lake, who switched to Hawthorn via a trade on Monday, as well as former Blue free agent Jordan Russell, who was strongly linked to Port before the Adelaide club lost Chaplin and Pearce.
At the very least, Pask said the AFL should consider handing out compensation picks while free agency was still going, instead of October 19, so as not to slow the process down.
"At the end of the day we are a professional organisation, so these things need to be addressed and need to be ironed out," he said.

Sad to see Murph go but when you have been at a club for 8 years and played less than 100 games without a major injury maybe its time to move on. He will be a great leader at the suns, but just couldnt find a spot at the hawks. he's an inbetween defender, sometimes its hard for inbetweens to cement a spot. Good luck at the Suns.

The AFL is the biggest joke in WORLD sport when it comes to the draft and free agency rules/setup.....

Players like Tippett, (yes im a Crows supporter, yes Im still pissed at the way this JACKASS has behaved) controlling where they go and how they get traded is pathetic, far from moral and quite frankly just plain stupid and makes the AFL look second rate and amateur at best! The AFL HAS to do something to change there ways, not load it in the favour of players who want to chase coin..... The clubs get left in the dark and basically waste time and money......

It is being reported that Clinton Young has walked out on the Hawks, to be announced today that he is signing with Collingwood. Terrible news, we rookie listed him when no-one else wanted to give him a chance, we got him a premiership medal, we stood by him through his injuries of the last few years, we up his offer to keep him and he walks out on us, and we get nothing for him. How is that right? We should have traded him 2 years ago
Ask how many of the Geelong players took pay cuts to play together and try and be part of something and not chase the $$$ on offer. If this isnt the kinda guy Young is then i dont want him at Hawthorn anyway. Go Hawks 2013.

Feel your pain mate ie tippett

Koby Stevens nominates Doggies as preferred destination. Another tough inside mid for the doggies hopefully. Ideally they'll by-pass wines in the draft then for KPP and outside mids :D

Hawthorn have done pretty well in recent years in the off-season. At least Young helped your club win a flag

Yeah but theres a problem with that, we traded very highly to get Gibson, Hale, Burgoyne etc to the Hawks, we get nothing for Young due to free agency. We put time into him when no-one else did, he/the AFL owe us. This free agency stuff isnt working if you ask me.

You'll get compo in the form of draft picks right? Probably won't be much more then a end of 2nd or 3rd round pick but...

You'll get small compensation today for losing a free agent won't you?

Also got a great deal on Gunston a year ago.
