Sega Mega Drive - REALLY???

I'd only call not legit because of how much higher it went than real value, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it went for $700 or so.
I'd price it at around $300. eBay sales vary heaps though with this stuff. An item can sell for $20 one day and $50 the next.

1. People are fan boys of stupid games and think they'd be cool collectables.
Example you could previously pick up Earthbound for $50, now its $300 unboxed. A few other games like this, however this is the most recent one to become popular. Earthbound is a great game, but it's certainly not worth that much in comparison to the fact it was not that limited.

Boxed is here for those interested @ $500 with 7 days left.

2. People have no idea of true value and just buy because they want to replay the game from their childhood.
Example: You can see copies of N64 games like Zelda being sold for $30(true value) - $100 because people just want to play them.
I think stores like Gametraders have a lot to do with this. I know someone that owned a Gametraders and they were selling copies of games such as Windwaker (collector's edition - which really isn't any rarer) for $250 just because people wanted to play the game again, whereas you can pick one up for around $50 if you wait. The games would only take a month or so to turnover as well. Other series such as Final Fantasy had this boom too.

It's a good time to sell. I doubt the market for this stuff will go up much more and these prices probably aren't sustainable. Unless of course you've got some holy grails in which case hang onto them. :)

The same has happened to gaming collectables. Lucky I got in before the crowd I say. :)

nah n64 games are expensive because of the fact that they are rare in PAL regions. rememebr N64 only sold like 35million consoles vs PS1 110million.

Disagree with you there.
While I understand N64 PAL games are worth more than NTSC N64 versions and PS1 games due to rarity, I'm saying you can still pick up a PAL version for $30, but some people choose to pay $100 for the same game (PAL version).

My N64 example was different to my first example. I'm saying N64 games vary in price too much, I'm not questioning their value, although it's nothing compared to some of the fan boy games pre-N64.

Some older games such as Earthbound demand much higher prices. No N64 game demands that amount of money. Some later releases such as Banjo Tooie and Majora's Mask are pretty high, as well as Conker's Bad Fur Day but none demand that super high price. Unless of course you go into the Majora's Mask Adventure Kit or other limited releases.

I've got an original SMD at home, with NBA Jam, and a few other games. Maybe I should sell them, won't ever play it/them, have them all on ROMs (oops).

That is your opinion that none demand that super high price, but in reality market demand determines value. If Conkers unboxed is selling for over $90 on eBay right now that is the demand price, even if it is what you call super high. Anything Nintendo 1st part will always be high. Gamecube will eventually join the craze as a lot of the PAL games you had to preorder to get a copy, ie metal gear solid twin snakes. It never made it to shelf in most places unless someone cancelled their preorder late.

Just proves the argument I used to have with my mates...cue breaking voice "SNES is crap, Megadrive is way cooler". Ahhh the days before acne.

Shining Force FTW!

You've misinterpreted what I've said. I'm not saying $90 is high at all, it's always sold at/around that price. 1. For it's rarity. 2. It's a good/unique series.
This hasn't seen a price increase. So yeah, it's foreseeable the price won't decrease.

I'm saying $300 for Earthbound is high, when you could previously purchase it for $50. An influx of fan boys in the game has caused that price rise - not because the game is rarer this year than it was two years ago. They didn't go and destroy a heap of copies or anything.
I suppose it's due to the popularity of video gaming increasing with the new generation of online gaming etc.

It's generally accepted on video game forums that this price rise in some series of retro gaming is most probably unsustainable.
I don't mind if it keeps going up, as I've already got a lot of these, including items such as the Majora's Mask Adventure Kit. It'd be a good time to sell.
I just think it's a trend for some items and the market will eventually level out and become more realistic, at the moment it's certainly at an all time peak for a lot of games.
Sure, the gaming industry will continue to grow over future console generations, I just can't see prices of all these retro games increasing as trends get old.

OK now I see what you are saying.

I agree eventually it will flatten out. I honestly think the biggest rise in retro gaming is due to the fact that a lot of modern gaming is just pure crap and unoriginal sequels. Its over saturated each year with same games (annual releases), too easy, too short, multiplayer focused (with garbage single player) and has more video cut scenes then actual game play.

Many people just want to kick back and enjoy those single player stories. If you look at console sales (even 3DS which is currently selling aroudn 250K units a week), they are not doing that great atm. I am hoping it is because the generation is just getting old, but I don't know as the economy in USA and Europe has hit people's pockets hard.

Who would have ever thought Sonic the Hedgehog would have been worth money one day........

It was worth its weight in gold back in the day!!! I loved that little hedgehog! Almost as much as i like Alex the kid - the built in game on the master system!! lol

Been thinking about chucking my Dreamcast and Master System gear up on eBay. Never use them anymore. Maybe now is the time.

Don't think I could part with the Neo Geo though.
