Is Gold Standard the biggest ripoff of recent times?

I posted this on another forum and thought I'd put it here to. I would STRONGLY suggest NOT buying this (11-12) product.

I{'ve been} getting a bit of grief for my comments in the box breaks {sections}, but it just astounds me that a) this product is $200 a box! and b) that people continue to buy this crap!

Last year you saw multiple Kobe autos in the same pack/case.

This year, the chase cards are the Bullion Tags (which are cool) and the Solid Gold (which are also cool). Yet the gap between them (extremely rare) and anything else decent seems to be massive.

It's a huge gamble and all I'm seeing is people throwing away hundreds and thousands of dollars.

And of course Panini are gonna keep doing this kind of thing with all the lemmings and greedy people out there who just won't stop buying them.

Why do you/they? It just seems mad! I'd be disgusted if I spent that much and pulled the likes of what most people are. A real kick in the guts. If it cost less it'd both be more worthwhile and also get more people buying it which helps the hobby.

Why spend $2000 on a case where the best card is a Stockton or Robertson auto. Why not keep that money for when a Solid Gold or Bullion Tag hits ebay and you'll be able to buy it from there (and for likely less...).

I'm hating on Panini at the moment, though they are putting out some pretty cards, the business aspect of it just disturbs me.

Interested to know the thoughts of others.

**especially now that at least the Bill Russell and Kobe Bryant Solid Golds have been pulled thus removing some bigger hits**

Like it hairy. Also dislike the stickers, some of te cards have a really great design but I can't handle a sticker.

I'm lost in your arguement, your post makes me believe that you don't like the product due to a bad experience, and are trying to picket-sign others into not buying it.

To ask others why they buy a product, and to say they're wasting their money, it really shouldnt be a concern for you man. I mean if I bought a box and was happy with the results, why should you mind?

Like every product, buying a box is always a gamble. Buying a lottery ticket or scratchie is a gamble, and dropping a goldy in a pokie machine is a gamble. People do it, because 1. they enjoy it, and/or 2. they hope for that big return some day.

I'm sure 99.99/100 of our members here on OCT who buy boxes rather than separate ebay items, will tell you they do it because they enjoy it.

It's a hobby, not a real estate market man.

Panini are just like every other marketing company around the world, they do what they can to attract people to buy their products. Do you smoke or drink? Same thing bud. We're all sheep a marketing world. We do what we want with whom we want.

UD aren't much better.

Look at the new retro fleer (IF IT EVER COMES OUT). case was $1200 originally. then jumped to $1789 because of the buzz. It has been delayed 6 times now as well.

However I still get it cause it is Fleer.

My only experience is seeing what other people are busting. I don't buy Panini, I think they're a ripoff - and this product is a massive example of that. They're using the appeal of the Bullion tags and Solid Golds to con people into buying the product at insane prices, then leaving them with worthless rubbish in return.

It's gambling, except unlike most other products the reward is so far out of reach that it's hardly worth playing.

I do like their Limited product, but I want actual collectors (especially younger ones) being able to buy a box and then not have to sit on a donut for weeks after their raping.

I'm just advising any people thinking about possibly buying this product that it is incredibly overpriced and that IMO people shouldn't buy it and hopefully Panini will learn that they can't get away with this crap.

People should open boxes for fun. But it's hardly fun when you spend $200 on a box and end up with nothing but junk, unless you get really excited by a jersey card or auto of a scrub-average player for your $200.

^^I think you answered your own argument in the original post. If people keep handing the $$$ over unfortunately they really have no incentive to make better product. Can think of an Australian card company with the same thought process.:cautious:

Yeah but I also want to hear from the people who still want to buy it and why. There are far better products to open for enjoyment and this is basically just a massive gamble with minute odds of success. Why are we, in the hobby, so open to that? I know it's always a gamble, but at this price point with this return, where you can get less than 5% back from a $2000 case as the best hit, how is that ok?

I think they also need to ease up on the redemptions. Seen a 3 box break with 5 redemptions cmon now thats just plain stupid. If we could get them redeemed and in hand in a few days/week tops then it might be ok. But we all know that just does not happen. They are flooding these 2011/2012 XRC whatever redemptions onto the market. Which really = less money when the cards come out due to the numbers

...because Robertson and Stockton kick ass? I don't bust many boxes at all but somebody has to for me to get access to such cards. Demand will fall off and there will be a price correction eventually by either Panini or the retailers.

Yoru rant also failed to mention how many redemptions are in this product offering (based on what I've seen to date) - kind of like you get reamed, part of it immediately and the rest you get to look forward to later!

Maybe it's part of the annual rookie hype too - strong class this year - be ineresting to see what happens with these anonymous rookie redemptions...

I'll leave the box busting to the serial offenders on here!

I have to agree with Scotty and you Graeme. From the breaks I've seen so far I don't the product is anywhere near $200/box and am glad I chose to join the Limited break rather than Gold Standard.
I agree that you're better off using the money to buy what you want from the product but Scotty is spot on, who gives a shit about what others spend on it. Hardly worth trying to get people to boycott it.

Completely valid point. I'd just like to make the unsuspecting purchasers aware. Those who should know better and still do, well they can do what they want with their money. However for anybody unsure of a product to buy and are considering this one, I strongly suggest that they don't do it!

I think most of the people buying Gold Standard know exactly what they are in for.

I stay right away from GS. I tend not to go any higher than Limited.

I agree 100%...i have watched a number of case breaks, and i thought to myself if i had of spent 2000+ on a case, i would be sadly disappointed!!! your lucky to get a kobe auto, one case had no gold peices and the other had three, they are numbered out of /49, so really not that rare as opposed to last year, no inserts and a heap of base, one less auto for a redemption, the design is nice and like the tags, but you would be lucky to get one, this is a big disappointment compared to last year, and to be honest unless the arse falls out of the price, i wont commit....big disappointment, panini have turned a great product into an also ran....

I just noted the 14k gold pieces this release are numbered up to 49?????????????

Wow, way to devalue the last years ones!! /6 or /8 etc makes it a good chase -then mass produce em! smh

Have watched about 7 case breaks now and have to say for a product I was looking forward to I won't be bust a box
I'll get the cards I want from eBay

Indeed, and if they don't perhaps they should watch some breaks on Youtube first.

And another thing imo any 1/1 should only ever be a patch or an auto. Again flooding the market with these base 1/1 is just nucking futs. Panini really need MJ and LBJ autos. The only way i could ever justify $200 a box these days is if they were a hit

Totally agree, the aura of the 1/1 is now gone, far too many. I just discovered that the 08-09 letterman patch has multiple 1/1's of the same player just different letters. I have only ever bought two boxes and they both sucked balls. You only ever win big time if u pull an mj with the price of boxes.
